Dr. Luis Paz-Ares is the chair of the Medical Oncology Department at the University Hospital October 12, the head of the Lung Cancer Unit at the National Cancer Research Center, and an associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.

Clinical focus and interest:

Dr. Paz-Ares’ work is focused on lung cancer and the development of new therapeutic strategies. He performs a combination of laboratory and clinical research and develops cutting-edge lung cancer treatments, striving to translate these developments into clinical practice.

Experience:

Dr. Paz-Ares qualified as a doctor in 1986 and completed his PhD in 1993 at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. He was a research fellow at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) from 1993 to 1995 and was awarded a master’s degree in clinical pharmacology from the University of Glasgow in 1995. He has published more than 340 academic papers, and in 2017 he was awarded the Lilly Foundation Award for Biomedical Research (Clinical) and the Ramiro Carregal Oncology Award for his research.

Affiliations:

Dr. Paz-Ares has been a member of several committees, including the Scientific Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Protocol Review Committee, the Audit and Financial Committee of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer, the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices, and the European Medicines Agency. He is the chief medical officer of the Spanish Association Against Cancer.
